We went to the station and got ourselves a Geneva Lake and Alps Pass for 5 days – with 2 days of unlimited travel on boats, trains, trams etc. So we had to make the most of it. We got ourselves some breakfast and caught the train to Montreux on the other end of the lake. From there we got a local train to Villeneuve. We thought we were going to be able to get off at Chillon, but no. So we got off at Villeneuve, which is a sleepy fishing village. It was quite nice, and we did see some people fishing…
After exploring that for a little bit, we headed to Chillon Castle, which is only about 20 minutes walk. It’s certainly beauitful scenery around here!!!
Chillon Castle itself is full on medieval castle. It’s bigger than we expected. Very touristy though – busloads of Asian tourists came through while we were there.
After this, we wanted to get lunch and ended up walking (and walking and walking) and not finding anything but when we saw a boat come in at Territet, we got on it and bought a roll each, and a beer (it was hot!) and had it on the boat while admiring the views. It took us back to where we’d come from, but oh well. Who knew when the next one would come…
We had to change boats in Vevey, where we had a little while to look around before the boat to Lausanne came.
Some more spectacular views, especially of the Lavaux wineries on the way to Lausanne:
Once in Lausanne, we had to wait about 40 minutes before we got a boat to Evian, in France, to have dinner there. Lausanne and the other towns on the lake have a feel very much like the French Riviera, I thought.
Evian was interesting mainly for the water named after it. We only had an hour and a half but were happy with the place we found, which is quite near the harbour. Eileen had a hamburger and I had mussels. Yum.
We finally got our sunset cruise!:
We got the ferry back across to Lausanne-Ouchy, and caught the Metro back to central station and from there, the train back to Geneva and our tram back to our hotel. Phew! It was after 11pm that we got back. A very late night for us!
