We had breakfast and packed our stuff up and left it at the B&B and went exploring the Citta Alta and Bergamo for the morning and early afternoon. Our flight out wasn’t until 4.40pm, so we had time…
We got the funicular up to the Citta Alta again and made the effort to go back to the Piazza Duomo and take photos of the churches without the sun in the way:
Then we headed off towards the other funicular to San Vigilio. This took us past the town hall and its tower and the other side of Citta Alta that we hadn’t seen yet:
We got the funicular to San Vigilio, which took us up even higher for some brilliant views of the Citta Alta and the whole landscape around Bergamo to the foothills of the Alps. Too bad it was so hazy:
We climbed up the tower of Castello di San Vigilio for even more views around the area. There’s some lovely countryside here!
We headed back to Citta Alta and to the Venetian Walls, which we’d seen from down below but hadn’t had a chance to investigate before:
I went down to one of the cisterns they’ve been excavating. There’s little stalactites in the windows…
When I got back to the top, where Eileen’d been waiting for me, I saw one of the little 3-wheel trucks parked there an asked Eileen to stand next to it to give it scale. They’re tiny!!
After that, more walking around the walls…
and then back through the Citta Alta to the funicular:
…where we had lunch in the cafe above the funicular. It wasn’t bad, actually. The views were not spectacular after the other views we’d seen all day, of course! But the food was good.
We tried to find gelato, unsuccessfully, and then went back to the lower city with the funicular, picked up our luggage and then caught the bus to the airport. At least it wasn’t as hectic and chaotic as our flight out of Geneva! And there was a gelato shop at the airport, so we got to have our final nociola gelata. And having priority boarding for our flight was nice, though we really just got to stand on the staircase, waiting, rather than upstairs with the rest of the people.
We got to Luxembourg on time and caught the bus to Central station and walked through the red-light district to our accommodation. I pick the best places 😉 The hotel room is small but quite good and very clean, so we’re happy.
