We left Wellington with sunshine. We had no idea Petone was so pretty! Proof here:
We stopped for a picnic lunch in Wanganui, at the park there. After we finished lunch, we drove through it some more in search of toilets and found this childrens’ playground. It’s the most amazing playground I have ever seen!!
We continued down Route 4 towards National Park and came across this lonely tree at the top of a hill. I really liked it, so took some photos of the golden hills.
A little further down the road, there was a fence, about 100m long, with pairs of shoes tied to it. It was interesting. There was no sign explaining it or anything.
Next stop was the Raukawa Falls Lookout. There was a tree in the way of the falls, so it wasn’t really a good view from the viewing platform. But I did like the single tree at the top of another hill.
Once we got to National Park, we had a coffee to revive from the 4 hour drive today, and then went on to Tongariro National Park to do a couple of short walks there. We were extremely lucky with the weather today, especially at Tongariro. There’s some fantastic views here! Our first walk was the Ridge Walk which was supposed to take 1 hour, but only took us 40 minutes, including photo stop. You can’t believe the times it suggests for walks in this country!
Then we drove up the mountain as far as the ski fields…
And did the Meads Wall Walk. I climbed up the wall for some fantastic views. My sister stayed down below because of her sore knees. She really missed out on something up here. But I must admit it was a bit scary up there in some places, with the sheer cliffsides!
After this we drove back to National Park and checked out the dinner options and decided on the Schnapps Bar. I had a steak and my sister had pork ribs. They were both around $25, so that was pretty good price and the portions were generous and good.
Full day tomorrow, so an early night!
